The Story Behind Plane’s New Logo

Ever since Plane launched in private beta 3 weeks ago, our logo has been purple, sometimes yellow and uses a font I can’t pronounce properly.

As the self appointed ‘brand executioner and DEO’ (design executive officer) I am super stoked to share with you our *new design.

*2 weeks old.

Originally we were using a Plane emoji inside a yellow app icon. But we needed to strengthen the core competency of its aesthetic existence. I also wasn’t totally sure whether we could get sued using the emoji.

Plane App Icon (the old one)

But we needed to double-down on design and build a new icon that our 30 TestFlight users would love. I was also well aware we could get a tasty blog post out of the process.

After exploring about zero ideas I decided to go on the internet.

I went on Wikipedia and looked for Plane. I then whipped the diagram below, tried to redraw it in Sketch and applied our colour palette. This took an hour.

The results were so tasty I knew the old Plane emoji icon was days.

From here I was getting relatively more serious and showed my co-founder who frankly doesn’t give a flying fuck about this stuff. He’s too busy building.

For the finishing touch I was going to try and round the corners but I’m less than competent with the bézier curve so I got too pissed off and decided we were golden.

So here she is. Swoon all you like…

New Plane App Icon.

Also purposeful when executed in situ…

When smaller

And we can put the name of the app next to the logo. Which is a massive value add, imo.

about us plug:

Plane is an icebreaker for expats to connect with new people in new places.

We’re currently in private beta but you can sign up to get a look over the next few weeks. We go live in Copenhagen first, very soon.

Thanks for reading this far, Tim.

Ps I ❤ Medium.
